Chevy-GMC, Nissan-Infiniti, Toyota-Lexus, Honda-Acura, What is the reason for all of this badge engineering?

Why don't they just stop all of the badge engineering, probably cost quite to have different grills, nameplate etc on cars that are for the most part exactly the same. Just save the money and p the savings onto the consumer. What do you think?
