Does an overdrive pedal increase volume?

I bought a Blackstar HT-5 and I'm trying to get a good metal tone at low volumes. I have heard of people using a digitech bad monkey overdrive pedal to get a good metal tone. I want to know if that will help me get the tone I want without increasing the volume.
