Why do atheists hope denial of eternal damnation will change the consequences for them on Judgment Day?

If I keep telling myself I do not have a toothache then I do not need a dentist. Strange though , even through my denial the pain is still there. Same with Atheists- they deny God because they deny that they are sinners , yet they still have the guilt of sin - perhaps all they really need is a visit with the dentist.
