Help with relationship problems?

I really need help. I have almost dated this guy for 10 months on and off because we have communication problems. And about 4 days ago, he broke it off again. He texted all my friends how much he misses me. But later in the day he said how he loves me and wants to be with me... but we can't be together. -What does that mean? Do we still have a chance? I know the normal thing to do is to breakup with him, everyone says we should... but he's the first guy I have ever fallen in love with and I really don't want to loose him. And if you do think we may have a chance, what is the absolute cutest thing i could send to him (via mail) that may make him reconsider. i don't want some cliche answer i want something that would be so freaking cute it would make you cry.
